Parental controls for Roblox: a complete parent setup guide (2026)

14 July 2026 · James Pearson

Short answer: to make Roblox safe for a child, set the account’s real age, turn on Roblox’s built-in Parental Controls with a Parent PIN, restrict content maturity, lock down chat and contact settings, and add screen time and spending limits. Then pair it with device-level controls and a content filter, because Roblox links out to chat, videos and web content that its own settings don’t fully cover.

Why Roblox needs its own setup

Roblox isn’t one game, it’s millions of user-created “experiences”, plus chat, friends, and a virtual currency (Robux). That openness is what kids love, and also why default settings aren’t enough. The risks parents care about are inappropriate experiences, contact from strangers, and overspending. The good news: Roblox gives you real controls, and they only take a few minutes.

Step 1: Set the child’s real age on the account

Roblox uses the account’s date of birth to apply stronger default protections for younger players (under-13 accounts get stricter chat and content defaults). Make sure the age is set correctly, guessing “older” quietly removes protections.

Step 2: Turn on Parental Controls with a Parent PIN

  1. Sign in to your child’s account and open Settings → Parental Controls.
  2. Add a parent email and set a Parent PIN (a 4-digit code your child doesn’t know).
  3. The PIN locks the settings below so they can’t be changed without you.

Step 3: Restrict content maturity

In Settings → Content Maturity (or Parental Controls), choose the maturity level for the experiences your child can access (from Minimal up to Restricted). Start stricter, you can always relax it. This is the single most effective Roblox control for younger children.

Step 4: Lock down chat and contact settings

Under Settings → Privacy, set who can chat, message, and add your child as a friend. For younger children, limit chat to Friends or turn it off. Review the friends list together and remove anyone your child doesn’t know in real life, contact from strangers is the risk safety bodies flag most for gaming platforms.

Step 5: Add screen time and spending limits

  • Screen time: set a daily Roblox limit in Parental Controls so play has healthy boundaries.
  • Spending: set a monthly Robux limit and require the Parent PIN for purchases. This stops surprise charges and pressure-buying inside experiences.

Step 6: Close the gaps with device and network controls

Roblox’s own settings are strong, but a determined child can still create a second account, open web links, or watch related videos elsewhere. Add two more layers:

  • Device controls (see our Android and iPhone guides) to control app installs and screen time overall.
  • A content filter that blocks unsafe categories across every app and browser, see how to block adult content. This is where a tool like Fyltec adds consistency Roblox’s own settings can’t.

Step 7: Talk about it (this is the part that lasts)

Settings work best when your child understands the why. Agree simple rules together, no sharing personal info, no chatting with strangers, tell you if something feels wrong, and check in weekly. Internet Matters has good conversation starters. Guidance beats surveillance every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Roblox safe for young children?

It can be, with the right setup, strict content maturity, limited chat, and adult supervision. Common Sense Media rates it suitable from around age 13 by default, and younger with careful controls.

Can my child bypass Roblox parental controls?

The Parent PIN protects the settings, but a child can make a new account. That’s why device-level controls and account approvals matter alongside Roblox’s own settings.

How do I stop overspending on Robux?

Set a monthly spend limit and require the Parent PIN for purchases, and don’t store a card on the child’s account.
